First Group Of Spaniards
Evacuated From Mumbai

Indian security forces are slowly starting to take control of the chaotic situation in Mumbai. Spanish businessmen Alejandro de la Joya and Álvaro Rengifo have been freed from Hotel Trident where they were being held hostage, and a group of sixty other Spaniards have left Mumbai on a flight chartered by Spain's Foreign Ministry. Another group of Spaniards are expected to board a flight bound for Europe tomorrow.

"We were lucky to have escaped the gunmen's line of fire," a relieved Rengifo told press today. The construction company director said that he was grateful for all the support he received in the 44 hours he was held hostage. He also praised the Indian authorities for their hard work and their decision not to cut off the electricity supply to the hotel in which they were trapped. "If they had cut off the electricity we would have been totally isolated and unable to maintain contact with the outside world," he said.

Rengifo also told reporters how he and De la Joya took it in turns to sleep in the 14th floor room in which they were trapped. "We ate chocolate and drank water from the mini-bar, but to tell you the truth, neither of us had an appetite. We were far too worried about what was happening," he told reporters.
