Cancer Parent Not Surprised

By Treatment Bungle

Mark Lehmann talks about errors with his son's cancer care (ABC News)

The parents of a child treated at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital say they are not surprised about recent mistakes with chemotherapy doses given to young cancer patients.

It has been revealed that 11 children were given overdoses due to an error with a pharmacy computer, which was picked up by a novice pharmacist when they double-checked information.

While his son Harry was not directly affected by the latest problem, Mark Lehmann says the cancer treatment seven years ago left him thinking that a normally-reliable hospital system was vulnerable whenever there was overcrowding.

He says he was not surprised to hear about the overdosages between late 2004 and October this year.

"Didn't surprise me at all, I mean there were numbers of times when I checked nursing staff and said 'I think you've got the wrong dose' and they did have," he said.

"And I'm not saying it's the nursing staff's fault in this case, but it didn't surprise me."

Mr Lehmann says the overall care was good, but times of high demand sometimes led to mistakes.

"They tended to happen when the Brookman ward was full and Harry had to be put on other wards so came across staff that weren't trained in dealing with kids with cancer," he said.

"They weren't up to date with the drugs that were being used and the equipment that was being used."
