Businessman connected to the 'Basque Y' and high speed train line shot dead.

Businessman Ignacio Uría Mendizábal (70) has died in Azpeitia, Guipúzcoa after being shot twice when he was in a vehicle. He had just come out of the premises of Altuna y Uría, the company contracted for the works on the high speed train line, known as the 'Basque Y', which has been threatened by the terrorist group ETA.

According to the first information received, two people were involved in this latest ETA attack and both escaped in a car towards the town of Zumárraga.

The businessman was shot at least twice - once in the head and once in the chest - he was said to have been in a car park next to the restaurant Kiruri, where he went every day to play cards. Half an hour after he was shot. The emergency services tried in vain to resuscitate Mendizábal before certifying his death.

Altuna y Uría was the victim of sabotage in March 2007 when unknown culprits slashed the tyres of several lorries belonging to the construction firm and sprayed them with slogans against the AVE train line.

The last fatal ETA attack happened on September 22nd when soldier Luis Conde de la Cruz died and six people were injured when a car bomb exploded in the Cantabria town of Santoña
